Hidden Surprises, What Do you Mean?

Well, not the good kind of surprises and I'm talking oil tanks (underground oil storage tanks)

What are Oil Tanks? A brief history

Early 20th century: Steel oil tanks gain popularity as oil becomes a cleaner and more efficient heating fuel compared to coal.

Mid-20th century: Oil heating booms in the 1950s and 1970s due to its low cost and abundance.

Late 20th century: Environmental concerns and a push for sustainable energy lead to a decline in oil heating and a shift to natural gas or electric systems.

21st century: Stricter regulations and a focus on sustainability drive the development of double-walled, leak-resistant oil tanks, as well as regular inspections and maintenance. Most modern heating options not do not use underground oil tanks.

Okay So Why Should I Care?

TLDR;

  • If your home was built in the early to mid 1900's then you may have an oil tank on your property and not even know.
  • Even if you have a newer home, you don't know for certain what was there before.
  • Oil poses an environmental threat
  • If you have an oil and it leaks, remediation could cost you $$$$ and as the owner/ new owner you are responsible by NJ LAW
  • Don't inspect just the house when you buy it, but the land too. You dont want any surprises.
  • Banks require Underground Oil Tank Sweeps prior to any mortgages in NJ
